Tourbière des Creusates

Description

This peat bog on a limestone mountain offers magnificent views over the beautiful surroundings of the Montagne de Bange, the Bassin d'Aix-les-Bains or Mont Blanc. This easy walk passes through a place where Man and Nature live peacefully side-by-side.

The Tourbière des Creusates is caused by a subterranean geological quirk, as the peat-filled basin is undoubtedly the result of the collapse of an underground karst cave. The clay-rich marl layer, sandwiched between the thicker limestone layers, explains the impermeability of the depression. This series of marl layers on the mountain ridge also explains why there are so many fertile Alpine plains on these gentle slopes.
Access via the top of the hamlet of La Magne, taking the access road to the Nordic ski area of St François de Sales - observatory. Park your car at the resort, and continue on foot (information panel in the picnic area terrace).
Please note: the Tourbière des Creusates is protected by a Biotope decree. A pedestrian footpath (mountain bikes prohibited) is the best way to explore the bog up close.
